The controversial world of Harry Potter

With the long-awaited last installment of Harry Potter out in cinemas last week, everyone has been buzzing about the movie. I haven't seen it, because I'm not a huge fan. It's visually appealing with an intriguing plot and amazing acting, but I'm not crazy about the scary moments in the film when evil is so... terrifying. So I've seen all previous Harry Potter movies, but that was only because my friends wanted to, there was nothing else worth watching, and I was curious to experience the magic of Harry Potter for myself. Honestly, it's not a big deal to me; it's mere entertainment, just like any other movie.

Last week, we had a morning devotion about the worldwide phenomenon that is Harry Potter, and it made me realize a lot of things. So here is my two cents about the good and evil side of Potter.

Bad
  • It portrays the world of magic in a very welcoming, non-threatening, fascinating, and wonderful manner, which is totally unlike the real world of 'magic' - dark, disturbing, and evil.
  • Since witchcraft looks so enticing in the movie (and lead characters are people just like you and me), tons of people around the world are attracted to it and have been signing up to become witches and wizards, without realizing what they're getting themselves into.
  • This movie is targeted at kids and teens, who are mostly innocent-minded and have no idea how to discern what's right and wrong. They only see the surface of the movie, and they don't realize the implications of getting involved in the occult.
  • There's the ripple effect, which we can see by the huge increase in magic books and movies and toys and schools that have popped up all over the world. Magic has become harmless and popular.

But on the other hand, you can say it's just a movie - mere entertainment - so there's no need to get all huffy about it because as long as we're able to discern what's good and bad (and stay away from the bad), it's fine to watch the movie and read the book.

Also, God calls us to be in the world but not of it. To be able to relate to people, we have to be able to connect with their interests, their pop culture, their likes, and their dislikes. If we draw the line at Harry Potter, what about all the other junk that's out there? Most movies have sex scenes or implications of sex, sleeping around is promoted in most TV shows, there's tons of violence in action and horror movies, popular music has awful lyrics that talk about alcohol, women, money, and sex... the list can go on forever. What makes Harry Potter worse than any of these other things? Is it because the occult is a darker and greater stronghold than perhaps violence or sexual promiscuity?

Are we to hide ourselves away in a cave to run away from this corrupted world so we don't open our minds to such wickedness? I don't think so. If we do that, we'll be unable to reach out to others because they'll think Christians are freaks who don't understand their culture at all. But then, if we do everything the world does and act like everyone else, what sets us apart from nonbelievers?

My mind is filled with questions galore. I'm not entirely sure where I stand on this issue, because I think it's a fine line. I don't think we can draw a line between black and white and say 'this is right' and 'that is wrong,' because there's a heck of a lot of grey areas.

I think it's up to the individual to evaluate and discern for his or herself. If you think doing something will stumble yourself or even your fellow brother or sister, then don't do it. But if you think you're okay with simply watching or listening to something and you won't be affected by it, then go ahead. Although... there is some truth to the fact that everything we expose our minds to has some sort of impact on our subconsciousness.

So... I really don't know.
Because... I love my TV shows, I love my hip hop songs, and I love my celebrity magazines. Yes, I know they all promote sex, drunkenness, promiscuity, unhealthy body image, materialism, and all that. And I admit, I have been influenced by their moral standards. But they're so entertaining, and to some degree, addicting. However, I honestly have connected to people (especially nonbelievers) on some level by talking about our identical interests in these things. Maybe there is a better way to relate to people besides this, or maybe if my walk with God is stronger I will somehow be immune to the corruption of the world... I'm not sure.

This issue is just confusing, and it's one I struggle with a lot. I'm a huge advocate for being up-to-date on popular culture, especially since I have a media communication degree, because even with all the filth and dirt that's in pop culture nowadays, it still has its redeeming qualities. Plus, let's face it - the entire world is consumed and affected by pop culture, and I believe the mass media can be one of the most effective ways to reach out to people.

Worst Reality TV Shows

I can’t imagine a time before reality TV, can you? Shows like ‘Survivor’ and ‘The Amazing Race’ have been around for countless seasons, and I really can’t remember what was on TV before these entertaining shows came on. I know reality TV has a bad reputation, seeing as how they’re full of catfights, backstabbing, and deliciously bitchy moments. And of course there are piles and piles of money to be won at the end.

It really brings out the worst behavior in humankind, motivated by money, the ‘root of all evil.’ But there are decent shows, like the above two mentioned, as well as ‘The Biggest Loser,’ which encourages people to lose weight and lead a healthy lifestyles (motivated by a cash prize), and ‘The Bachelor,’ which I view as harmless entertainment but others see it as a demeaning spectacle of relationships. Okay, I guess when I say ‘decent,’ I mean somewhat less undignified than the trashy shows listed below.

Temptation Island

I watched a few episodes of this show back in the day, when it was seen as shocking and controversial because of its content in a time where people were still conservative. But bring this show back now and people wouldn’t bat an eyelid. It’s about unmarried couples who are brought to an island where they experience temptations from the opposite sex, and their love is put to the test. Obviously some people failed. Sounds like real life – I don’t know why these people needed to be brought to an island when they could’ve faced those temptations anywhere. Well, I guess people tempting each other in bikinis and speedos is more entertaining than if they were in thick coats and jackets.

The Real Housewives of…

Really. I don’t know why there’s so much hype surrounding this. Ridiculously rich housewives going shopping, bitching about one another, going for manicures… Who really cares. And why are we helping them get even richer by supporting their pointless show??

Farmer Wants a Wife

When I first saw the preview for this series, I thought, “Wow, those TV producers must be getting desperate, or else their creative juices must be running on empty.” They put a Missouri farmer on TV, looking for love and choosing between several city girls… Right. It’s basically ‘The Bachelor’ in the cornfields. As interesting as watching my toenails grow.

My Super Sweet 16

Okay, first off, I have to admit I watch this series whenever I can. I know everyone else hates seeing those spoilt teenagers throwing ridiculously huge parties and receiving insane gifts like a car and some celebrity performing at their shindig, but… I just love laughing at how bratty they are, and how their parents give them whatever they want, not knowing they’re just raising their kids to be the next bimbo Paris Hilton. But it does get annoying at times, watching them toss so much cash out the window like its water. I mean, their freaking party could probably feed thousands of starving people for years, but do they care? No, they just want to scream at everyone and boss them all around and rub their decadent lifestyles in everyone’s faces! Okay, I may or may not be a teeny bit jealous of how insanely rich they are.

My Big Fat Obnoxious Fiancé

This poor girl, Randi Coy, agreed to have a fake marriage with fiancĂ©, Steve, in order to win some money. Things would’ve gone much smoother if Steve played along, but little did she know that he was an actor who fit the title perfectly. Big and horrendously obnoxious in every way, he scared her unsuspecting family to tears. But they put up with it, and everyone won money in the end. I think I actually watched every episode of this one (I must’ve been bored), and it was rather painful. This is one instance where the end goal is not worth the traumatic journey.

The Swan

A mix of Extreme Makeover and every pageant contest known to humankind, this series was downright distressing to watch. I gave up after one episode. Just seeing those poor women with low self esteem go under the knife to become ‘beautiful’ by society’s standards was heartbreaking. My humble opinion has always been, say NO to plastic surgery. I think we were all created beautiful, and beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Seriously, a good haircut, contacts, and some makeup can change your life. I speak from experience. AND THEN, after they become unrecognizable after surgery, they enter into The Swan pageant to see who’s the most beautiful. Superficial. And talk about an immediate blow to your self-esteem. Can you imagine how awful they would feel if they went through all that surgery and STILL didn’t win the pageant??

Dating in the Dark

I didn’t plan on watching this one; I thought the premise was ludicrous, but someone told me to watch it for pure entertainment’s sake, and so I did. The show brings 3 men and 3 women into a house, and they never get to see the opposite sex until the final reveal. Their only interaction is in a dark room, where they talk, snuggle, play games, make out, etc. So obviously some couples connect, and emotions are stirred… Until they reveal their physical appearances to each other. And the ugly superficiality of humanity surfaces. Most of the time, the not-so-attractive person is left alone while the other leaves because, despite what we try to tell ourselves about inner beauty, we are a shallow generation. Everything about the show is cringe-worthy, because we all know the ugly person is just waiting to be rejected. I was relieved when the show finally ended.

Who Wants to Marry a Stranger

(This show must've been pretty obscure. Or else it was taken off air after one episode, because I couldn't find any picture of it at all.)

I just saw an episode of this show last night, and it was so absurd I totally had to include it in this list. Actually, this was what inspired me to make the list in the first place. It starts off with a woman planning her marriage. Sounds normal, right? But wait, she has no idea who the groom is. How she can plan a marriage around that, I have no idea. So it gets better – her mother, her best friend, and her sister get to meet 5 charming guys, interview them and their families in a mere 3 days, and pick one to marry the ‘lucky’ lady.

Filled with stressful moments, tense situations, and awkward circumstances, it’s actually a little entertaining, once you get past how sorry you feel for the bride. She must be paid a heck of a lot of money to do this, otherwise she’s either hearing her biological clock ticking fast and she's completely desperate to get married or she’s plain insane. I mean, meeting her husband at the altar for the first time? Not getting a chance to even see or talk to each other before they say ‘I do???’ It was definitely NOT the happiest day of their lives. And the shocker – both actually said yes. They probably thought if the marriage didn't work out, they could just get a quickie divorce. Seriously, marriage is becoming nothing but a piece of paper these days.

A Shot at Love with Tila Tequila

Oh boy. I was introduced to this outrageous MTV series in Chicago over sophomore year fall break, and I remember the girls being addicted to it. So I decided to give it a try, to see how good or bad it was. And it was BAD. It’s basically like ‘The Bachelorette,’ only this crazy Tila Tequila person is bisexual and gets intimate with girls and guys alike in the house. Talk about a messed up world. Needless to say, I wasn’t much of a fan.

I’m a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here

I saw half of an episode once, mostly propelled by curiosity as to how Speidi (Heidi and Spencer from The Hills) were doing on the show. And my interest totally waned after mere minutes. This show just screams ‘desperate D-list actors trying to get into the limelight again.’ I didn’t even recognize anyone on the show except Speidi and Janice Dickinson, former catty America’s Next Top Model judge. The show’s concept was similar to Survivor’s, except with way less interesting people.

Are You Hot?: The Search for America’s Sexiest People

I'm guessing these are the 'hot' guys

The title says it all. Guys and girls would go on stage before a panel of judges, who would tell them if they were physically ‘hot’ or ‘not,’ AND THAT WAS IT. Superficiality at its proudest. There is seriously nothing redeeming about this show. I mean, who are the judges to say who is hot and who is not???

Marriage Ref

My friend showed me an episode of this once, and it was so absurd, we laughed our heads off. Basically, couples who cannot resolve their domestic arguments bring their case before a panel of judges (as well as the entire world), who will help them decide who wins. And some of their disputes are completely ridiculous, such as the husband who wanted a stripper pole installed in the bedroom because he wanted his wife to spice things up (of course the wife was horrified and appropriately indignant, but the husband won in the end), and the crazy husband who loved his dog so much he stuffed and preserved the dog after it died, and put it in a shrine in their house so he could see his dead stuffed dog everyday (if I were the wife, I would run away screaming immediately, and yes, she won of course). Oh the things people do. Amazes me sometimes.

So yeah, I don’t know why these reality TV shows are on air, but hey, if ever you’re really really really bored, and you've already plucked out all your hair and counted every speckle of dust in the room, then there’s always the last option of the trashy reality TV show.

Random movie quotes

Americans love to quote movies. Sometimes I wish I were as good as them at memorizing all these classic movie lines. It's like they can watch a movie a few times and start quoting it every chance they get. Me, I don't even remember a line from any of my favorite movies. Well, I guess I know Forrest Gump's "Life is like a box of chocolates - you never know what you're gonna get," and Star Wars' "May the force be with you," but everyone who's ever watched a movie knows that.

So anyway, even though I don't memorize movie quotes word for word, there are several movie quotes that kind of stuck out to me over the years...

The Devil Wears Prada

LOVE this film. I'd say it was Anne Hathaway's breakthrough from being typecast as 'the girl from The Princess Diaries.' Although it intimidates me a little, thinking about how cutthroat the magazine industry is.
So there's this scene where Miranda's assistant talks about her obsession with her body image, and she goes, "I'm on this new diet, it's very effective. I don't eat anything, and when I feel like I'm about to faint, I eat a cube of cheese... I'm one stomach flu away from reaching my goal weight."
Painfully true reflection of society today.

When Harry Met Sally

Classic friends-turned-to-lovers story. I liked the part when Harry turned up at the party in the end and told Sally, after years of friendship and on-off relationships, "I came here tonight because when you realize you want to spend the rest of your life with somebody, you want the rest of your life to start as soon as possible."

Hitch

One of the better romantic comedies - original and not as cheesy as other films. And you can tell that I'm somewhat of a romantic, because I liked when Hitch said, "So how does it happen, great love? Nobody knows... But what I can tell you is that it happens in the blink of an eye. One moment you're enjoying your life, and the next you're wondering how you ever lived without them."

Mean Girls

I don't know what it is about this movie, but it's owned by practically every girl on campus at Taylor. I guess it's a pretty true and ironic portrayal of girls and high school. So there's this part where Cady gets a revelation after doing a complete 180 and realizing she was becoming 'plastic,' and she says, "Calling somebody else fat won't make you any skinnier. Calling someone stupid doesn't make you any smarter."
Totally agree. Whoever said sticks and stones will break your bones, but words won't hurt, was completely lying.

500 Days of Summer

I just watched this movie again, and I love everything about it. The cinematography, the music, the actors and the acting, the plot, and the wicked dialogue. Although I kind of disagreed with what the narrator said at the end, "Most days of the year are unremarkable. They begin and they end with no lasting memory made in between. Most days have no impact on the course of a life."
I think everything we do has an impact - on our lives and on others'. Even the smallest, most insignificant things. So although sometimes we go through days that feel mundane and monotonous, I think they still have some sort of impact, because I believe everything happens for a reason, and it's that sort of mindset that helps you through the ups and downs of life. I mean, if you didn't believe things had an ultimate purpose or goal, then really what's the point of life at all?

Never Been Kissed

Okay I realized all my movies on this list are somewhat romantic comedies, but so what. They have good value too, especially when geeky Josie Geller tells her co-workers about how she's waiting for the right guy to come along and sweep her off her feet, and she says, "That thing, that moment, when you kiss someone and everything around becomes hazy and the only thing in focus is you and this person and you realize that that person is the only person that you're supposed to kiss for the rest of your life, and for one moment you get this amazing gift and you want to laugh and you want to cry because you feel so lucky that you found it and so scared that that it will go away all at the same time."
I used to think she was such an idealist and a dreamer, but now I think the world could use more people like that.

I also liked what she said at prom, when she declared to the high school kids that "There is a big world out there... bigger than prom, bigger than high school, and it won't matter if you were the prom queen, the quarterback of the football team, or the biggest nerd in school. Find out who you are and try not to be afraid of it."
So true. School totally doesn't matter. Who you were in high school or college doesn't matter, because you can totally reinvent yourself when you step out into 'the real world.'

Spiderman 3

Not the best Spiderman movie, but it had a crazy interesting quote. I think it was when Spidey was attacked by the black venom and went bad, and he said something like, "If you want forgiveness, get a religion."
Um, pretty sure I don't agree with that. Forgiveness is universal; we forgive each other, and God forgives us. It's not some rule within some religion. But then again, he said it when he was 'evil,' so I guess it makes sense that it would be controversial.

Zoolander

Ben Stiller cracks me up here. He's so incredibly stupid, it's actually funny. Like when he sees the model version of a center he's building, and he exclaims in genuine indignation, "What is this?? A center for ants? How can we be expected to teach children to learn how to read... if they can't even fit inside the building??"
His innocence/ignorance is hilarious.

Dumb and Dumber

Classic idiotic comedy, but oh so funny. Jim Carrey at his finest, channeling the stupidity of Lloyd. Like when he tries to hit on Mary.

Lloyd: What do you think the chances are of a guy like you and a girl like me... ending up together?
Mary: Well, Lloyd, that's difficult to say. I mean, we don't really...
Lloyd: Hit me with it! Just give it to me straight! I came a long way just to see you, Mary. The least you can do is level with me. What are my chances?
Mary: Not good.
Lloyd: You mean, not good like one out of a hundred?
Mary: I'd say more like one out of a million.
(pause)
Lloyd: So you're telling me there's a chance??? YEAH!

And when Harry tries to read the map to tell Lloyd where to go, he says, "According to the map, we've only gone 4 inches."

Hahaha.
I don't know how scriptwriters think of such great funny stuff.

What I fill my mind with

If you ask any of my friends here, they'll tell you I watch a ton of TV shows. I mean, I'm in America, the land of great trashy TV! I have to make full use of all the available entertainment here while I can! And I'm here to say entertainment shouldn't be viewed as all meaningless junk. Sometimes there is a little bit of entertainment value even in the trashiest TV shows, although shows like Tila Tequila's Shot at Love and I Love New York (rubbish reality dating shows) should never be seen by anyone with a lucid mind. But I think there is a line between being in the world and being of the world.

We shouldn't rope ourselves off from culture by living in a cave to avoid temptation, neither should we completely indulge in culture until it consumes our entire being. We need to at least know what's going on in popular culture to remain relevant, so knowing that teen girls are crazy over Twilight, or that college girls love to watch The Bachelor no matter how wrong the concept is, is actually important. I mean, we need to be able to relate to others and have some sort of knowledge of popular culture, because that's what everyone will be talking about. And to have some say in the conversation to connect with others, we have to actually understand what they're saying.

So that's my little rationale for watching all these TV shows. Plus sometimes you just need a little mindless entertainment to take your mind off the stresses of life.

TV Shows I am Currently Watching:

-LOST

The first time I heard about this mind-blowing show was when my brother introduced it to me, way back in season 1. I shrugged it off as another lame scary TV show that probably wouldn't last. Boy, was I wrong. I finally started getting into it sophomore year, I think, when I realized what a big deal it was on campus. Everyone who was anyone watched it, and so I thought, how bad could it be? Turns out it wasn't bad at all. I got caught up on all the seasons, and from then on, I was addicted. The show throws so many twists and turns that you're just kept on the edge of your seat the entire hour. And throughout the viewing experience, the dominating chain of thought usually goes something like this - 'no way, they did NOT just do that! that's insane!' (insert jaw dropping and eyes widening in shock)

Well, that's LOST for you. The amount of conspiracy theories and websites devoted to this show speaks volumes of its intensity and addictiveness. It's probably the only show I actually actively watch and discuss with others, because we just can't figure out what's going on... until May 22, 2010. The dreaded day when all this will end. I can't imagine what LOST fanatics will do when the show ends for good. I should add that LOST is also probably the only semi 'intelligent' show I watch, at least according to my friends.

-Grey's Anatomy

I know, I know, this show is STILL running?? It's probably in its sixth or seventh season, and I lost interest a while ago and skipped out on a few seasons, but now I'm back to watching it, mostly because it's a good way to waste time. It's changed a lot since season 1, where Meredith and gang started off as little interns, but it's pretty much heading toward a downward spiral right now. Some things just shouldn't last too long. And I've noticed that a lot of TV shows nowadays like to add a lesbian factor to their plot. What's with that?? Is it the result of the success of gay campaigning for equal rights or something?? This show has a lesbian couple, and there's one in Desperate Housewives, and a ridiculous threesome in Gossip Girl. What is going on, Hollywood???

-America's Next Top Model

What can I say, I love watching beautiful people on TV. Not that models are always pretty, but they make them pretty with piles of makeup and hairspray, and it's so fascinating to watch them transform from awkward bony girls to gorgeous supermodels in front of the camera. I love the photo shoots because they're just so ridiculous, and no one would ever wear those outfits in real life. Plus girl drama is always entertaining to watch.

-Gossip Girl

YES, Gossip girl is back, and with a vengeance! I have come to accept Serena and Nate's fickle-mindedness - I'm pretty sure they both have dated almost every other person on the show, and more. So I think they deserve each other indeed, since their relationships never seem to go past the physical. I'm glad Hilary Duff is gone, because she was just like an annoying little bug that had to be squashed. The first episode since its return was a little dry and dull, but, knowing Gossip Girl, things will probably spice up soon. xoxo

-Ugly Betty

I don't know a lot of people who watch this show (actually I don't know anyone who does), but I really genuinely like it. Maybe it's because Betty has my dream job in my dream city - working at a fashion magazine in New York City - that's why I watch it every week without fail. It's just so interesting to see what goes on behind the scenes in magazine publishing, even though I know most of it is probably exaggerated for the sake of drama. But still, I want to learn everything I can about my future dream job! Plus I love the fashion in the show.

-The Vampire Diaries

I never thought I would watch anything with vampires in it, until Twilight came along. And then my roommate in Los Angeles made me watch this, and I was kind of intrigued. Its concept started out pretty similar to that of Twilight's - a handsome, charming vegetarian vampire who falls in love with a human girl - but now it's evolved to break away from the Twilight mold. I'm still not entirely sure if I like it, I feel like its geared more toward teen girls. But it's mildly entertaining, and a good way to pass time, although it scares me occasionally, with its vampire cult and witch lore. I probably shouldn't be supporting the show huh.

-Flashforward

The show is returning on Thursday, and I am psyched!! Okay, it actually started out tremendously captivating, what with its 'the whole world blacked out on this day, and everyone who survived saw their future' slogan, but it got a little monotonous toward the end. So I'm looking forward to seeing what the writers have come up with and how they're going to hold our attention for a few more episodes.

Other honorable mentions include Glee, which is kind of like High School Musical, but WAY better. The acting is a little stiff, but the cast is incredibly interesting to watch and their songs are just riveting. Plus Matthew Morrison (the teacher) is definitely easy on the eyes, and Jane Lynch (the evil PE teacher) is seriously funny as the villain.

And What Not to Wear, which is this awesome show on the TLC channel that picks out horribly dressed people who have no fashion sense whatsoever, and gives them a makeover. I love makeover shows!! They just go to prove that everyone and anyone can be beautiful with the right hairstyle and makeup and clothes, no need for plastic surgery at all.

I am so glad someone somewhere in the past invented TV. What would we do without it? Probably find more useful ways to spend our time, but in TV's defense, I LOVE IT!

Best vs. worst movies

I have decided that, since I want to be some kind of lifestyle writer when I grow up, I will have to start now (I know, it's kind of late. Oh to be 16 again) and practice writing everyday about topics that interest me.

So this is Day 1. Here goes.

Movies are like food for my soul. They used to be a form of escapism for me; I absolutely LOVED going to the theaters because two hours of sitting in the dark on a comfortable chair were a welcome distraction from the problems of life. As soon as the opening credits started rolling, I was whisked off my feet and immersed in a new world where I could live vicariously through the lives of the characters. And boy, did they lead interesting lives (as compared to mine). In those two hours, I was carefree. A weight had been lifted off my shoulders, and I was thoroughly entertained, completely engaged, and blissfully happy all at once. But then life would slap me in the face once the lights came on again.

That doesn't happen so much anymore. I don't think it was very healthy to begin with. I feel that movies can provide some sort of escapism from our dull, awful, problematic lives, but they're also a form of entertainment and art. Now I see them as pieces of work, delicately crafted together by talented people who have a story to tell and a unique style in which they communicate their message to the world.

I love movies that speak a beautiful message; I love movies that create a whole new world where the possibilities are endless; I love movies that bring a smile to my face and tears to my eyes; I love movies that are thought-provoking and inspiring; Sometimes I love movies that are just plain fun and goofy.

So I have compiled a list of, in my humble opinion, the best and worst movies I've seen (in no particular order). Enjoy.

Best films

1. Shawshank Redemption (1994)
Beautifully written, with amazing performances by Morgan Freeman and Tim Robbins, and an inspiring storyline that maps out the road to redemption with interjections of hope, spirit, and determination.

2. The Dark Knight (2008)
Christopher Nolan is an absolute genius. Heath Ledger's psychotic smile sent shivers down my spine. Add Christian Bale, Aaron Eckhart and Michael Caine to the mix, and you've got a smash hit at the box office.

3. Fight Club (1999)
At first glance, the film revolves around a loser-ish insomniac who meets a conniving soap salesman that seems to be the total opposite of him. Lots of fighting and confusion ensue between Edward Norton and Brad Pitt. But the twist at the end? Absolutely brilliant and downright mind-blowing.

4. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004)
Funnyman Jim Carrey gets serious in this intriguing drama with Kate Winslet about dealing with heartache in a new way - erasing all memories of your former flame to escape from the pain. Don't tell me you've never thought of erasing an agonizing memory before.

5. Beauty and the Beast (1991)
A classic tale of inner beauty and a love that conquers all. Plus incredible songs to sing along with, talking objects, and my favorite princess Belle. What's not to like?

6. Elf (2003)
I love Christmas-related films, and I'm not ashamed to say I like Will Ferrell, so yes, this movie is one of my favorites. Watching Buddy the Elf explore New York City with child-like enthusiasm, eat spaghetti with syrup and candy, and instill the Christmas spirit in everyone is just the perfect movie to snuggle up on the couch with a mug of hot chocolate on Christmas Eve. Plus everyone loves Zooey Deschanel.

7. The Prestige (2006)
Again, Christopher Nolan with Christian Bale and Hugh Jackman equals to an amazing movie that kept me riveted for the entire duration. Magic, intrigue, deceit, and a jaw-dropping twist. Need I say more?

8. Love Actually (2003)
Being a big fan of rom-coms, this is definitely one of my favorites. Several stories chronicle different aspects of love in a magical and wonderful way. Plus it's during Christmas. Many 'awwwww' moments prove that love is actually all around indeed.

9. Up (2009)
To me, Pixar can do no wrong. From Toy Story to Finding Nemo to Monsters Inc., they've never failed to amaze me, and 'Up' is no exception. I laughed, I cried, I re-lived my childhood dreams... I enjoyed the entire movie immensely.

10. 500 Days of Summer (2009)
This oddball rom-com is a whirlwind of fresh air in the world of cliched love stories. It tells the story of a boy who is head over heels in love, and a quirky girl who turns his world upside down. The film goes back and forth in time constantly, and still manages to deliver all the pieces of the story beautifully.

11. How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days (2003)
An ambitious journalist, a writer with a sense of humor, a bet, and a unique love story makes up one of the most quotable movies of all time (for girls). "Benny boo boo," "Our love fern, you let it die!" "Princess Sophia"

Worst Films

1. The Princess and the Frog (2009)
Disney doesn't usually disappoint, but with its newest offering, I have to say there's a first time for everything. Its modern day version of the classic Frog Prince story fails to muster up the enchanting delight of previous Disney films, and the whole voodoo thing just creeps me out. What happened to innocence and charm?

2. Sin City (2005)
Dark. Violent. Gruesome. Repulsive. It's enough to turn you off in the first five minutes of the film. Although it does attempt to be stylistic, what with the black and white scenes and the yellow blood, the entire plot and concept is overwhelmingly revolting and horrific. It makes me shudder just thinking of it.

3. Napoleon Dynamite (2004)
Americans love this movie. I detest it. It was plotless, meaningless and pure boredom, and the only reason I sat through the entire thing, torturous as it may be, was because I thought it would somehow get better. It didn't.

4. 300 (2006)
Boys love this movie; I have no idea why. It blends violence, gore, hideous scenes of carnage, and weird mythical creatures. My hands were covering my eyes more than half the time. And no, the painted-on abs didn't help.

5. Over Her Dead Body (2008)
You know we've become a completely superficial society when a movie fails because the lead actress (Lake Bell) isn't attractive. Not only that, the storyline falters and flounders like a fish out of water. All in all, a very painful 95 minutes to sit through.

6. Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (2008)
I've never been a fan of the Indiana Jones series, and this certainly doesn't change my mind. To blame the entire adventure and mystery on aliens is such a cop-out and a disappointment. It's like they didn't know how to end the story, so they just opted for the easy way out.

7. You Don't Mess with the Zohan (2008)
This was a disaster in so many ways. I love Adam Sandler's movies, don't get me wrong. Big Daddy, The Wedding Singer, and The Longest Yard were hilarious. But this is just too crude and slapstick for my liking.

8. Dragonball Evolution (2009)
Asians love Dragonball, right? Yes, that used to be the case, until Hollywood ruined it for us by casting a Caucasian male as the lead Asian dude. He looks nothing like the cartoon character we all grew up with and love! Are Asians not good enough to carry the movie as the lead?? Plus the entire film was just a joke all around.

9. Superbad (2007)
'Superbad' is super bad, indeed. Three teenage boys answer to the call of their hormones; all they can think about is drinking, partying, and getting laid. Such a typical guy movie.

10. Fighting (2009)
Channing Tatum once again assumes the role of a down-and-out guy who gets discovered because of his talent (in fighting). This slow-paced, utterly predictable, and cliched story is a total yawnfest; even Tatum in all his hotness failed to save it.

11. Gamer (2009)
I admit I haven't actually seen this. The trailers looked semi-interesting, and probably attracted avid gamers, but from what I've heard, this is one of the most brutal, grisly, and savage movie there is. Most people who watched it in theaters walked out after 10 minutes of agony.

So there you have it. 11 of my most favorite and least favorite films of all time.

Melting snow

Melted snow + muddy ground = GROSS.
It's funny how snow can be so pure and white and beautiful when it falls and covers the ground, but when people step on it, or it starts to melt, it becomes really disgusting and slushy. which is how it is right now.

Anyway, time's been flying by. i don't even remember what i've been doing for the past couple of days, besides homework and frantically searching for jobs. haha. we've been cooking and selling noodles for students on campus the past two nights, that was fun. we cooked thai, vietnamese and korean ramen, and charged people for $1 per cup, proceeds go to charity. it's funny how excited americans get about 'authentic' ramen from asia. hahahaha. (which we bought in indiana)

Random people would come up to us and be like, YEAH! RAMEN! i want one! haha. and then we pasted facts about asia on the cups, and they were like, YEAH! this is so cool! and we've earned about $100 these two nights. so yay! and it's funny 'cause the charity we're giving our earnings to, ONEVERSE, is coincidentally having a contest to see who can raise the most money, and the winner will get a Superbowl (football national final game) party. and we were challenged by some people 'cause they thought we were in it to win the contest. but we're like... seriously... we're asian. we don't care about football. haha.

SO ok the real reason why i blogged (even though its almost 1am and i'm exhausted)...
I met this actor, Doug Jones, when i was in LA, he came to speak to our class about the difficulties of being a Christian in Hollywood. and now he's in an article in Christianity Today! he's SUCH a great person, seriously, don't know how he remains so strongly rooted in his relationship with God when he's surrounded by materialistic money-minded people 24/7.

Here's the article:
http://www.christianitytoday.com/ct/movies/interviews/2010/dougjones-jan10.html

Anyway, i thought the part where he talked about doing projects that he didn't necessarily agree with (theologically) was interesting. He said that sometimes people offer him roles in movies that are theologically incorrect and portray God wrongly, but he takes them up. Why? Because he said, 'they're going to make this movie with or without me. And even though I'm a very small part of it, wouldn't it be good if I was in this position as a Christian, being a part of the discussion?'

I thought that was so interesting. because Christians usually shy away from 'evil' movies that portray God as some horrible character, but here is this guy, accepting these roles because, like he said, they're going to make the movie WITH OR WITHOUT HIM. so might as well jump on board and try to influence it as much as he can... to make sure they don't go overboard, and also to start discussions about religion and God. Fascinating huh.

Strange happenings

Pics from our film shoot in the mall and in the casting suite.

Our casting suite decked out to be our 'office'. Isn't that dead tree in the corner awesome??? we found it in the trash. hahaha. along with the desk.

CUTEST KID EVER. pretty good actor too. and very hyper.

Actors doing their job in the mall.

Camera equipment all set up in the mall.

On the street

So... I've noticed I often get attention from Hispanic/Black guys on the street, especially when I'm alone. No idea why... but it's so awkward and a little creepy.

Scenario: I'd be happily strolling down the street, minding my own business, and then I see this guy in the distance, leaning against the wall. And i'm just like, okay, he's just a dude, no big deal. But then I get closer, and he gives me that look, and I'm like, great, I know you're up to something. And then as I pass him by, and in my mind I'm going 'please don't say anything, please don't say anything.'
But of course, he says something lame and stupid like 'helloooo giirrrrll' or 'what's up baby' or 'hey beautiful'.

And sometimes they get really original. One guy said 'oooh la laaaa!' and did a little dance as I passed. And another guy was hilarious. He went, 'Me love you long time!' And pointed at me. So then of course my friends and I burst out laughing, and laughed even harder when he looked confused as to why we were laughing at his confession. hahaha. Such weird people here!

And most of the time I either offer them a sheepish 'hi-you're-weird-but-I'm-smiling-at-you-so-you-don't-stab-me-in-the-back' smile, or I ignore them and walk away as fast as I can. And usually the second approach works better.

So yeah. weird encounters.

2012

Anyway, we finally went to see the newest disaster flick '2012' and it was awesome!!! at first we were going to see 'Armored' for free but we got there too late and all the seats were taken. so we got student discounts ($9 in LA is super cheap!) and it was totally worth it. the theatre was the prettiest I've ever seen, which makes sense, since it was in Beverly Hills.
The movie was a little cheesy at times, but had very relatable characters and totally kept our attention the entire time, even though we were all tired from all-nighters the night before. it was so intense! i was on edge the whole time.
And then we went and got $1.50 ice cream sandwiches!! ice cream squashed in between two cookies for super cheap. yummy goodness :)

FREEDOM!

OMG freedom is so close I can almost taste it. Yesterday i turned in my stupid theology paper (YES, FIST PUMP! Done with that ridiculously useless class) and my script (103 pages in total! FEELS SO GOOD TO HAVE A FINISHED SCRIPT!)... 2 more hours till I get off work FOREVER, and then the producer's notebook is due tomorrow, and then.... FREEDOM! :)

Oh and we have a premiere at an actual movie theater for our films, and I just learned that producers have to INTRODUCE THE CAST AND CREW. in front of EVERYONE - classmates, professors, industry people, actors... omg. major stage fright bubbling up in me now.
But I'm looking forward to seeing everyone's completed films :)
